Susan B. Anthony is one of the most influential women in American history. She spent much of her life speaking, working, and fighting for equal rights for everyone. She was also one of the key leaders of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States.

This biography unit has it all! There are a variety of activities for you to teach about Susan B. Anthony’s life story. This could be a week-long unit or as short as a day or two, depending on time allotted and the needs of your students. There are several ways to use this unit to differentiate for students.

Reading:

Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to making the world a better place for everyone! Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the greatest civil rights leaders and one of the most influential people in American history.

This unit on Martin Luther King, Jr. includes many interactive activities and learning opportunities for students including:

There are three main activities:

Vocabulary:
Introduce the vocabulary words with the real-life photo posters included. You could post these posters around the classroom and have students travel around to define the words.

Reading:
Next, have students read the informational articles where they will meet Martin Luther King Jr. and learn all about his life. Articles are written in a kid-friendly format with questions and scenes for students to connect and color.

Student Activities:
Have students complete the Mystery Flaps and the 6-page Flip-Up Booklet all about Martin Luther King Jr. I usually have them do one page at each center or station. They can use the articles as a reference source to help them complete the pages of the booklet. Lastly, they cut, color, and assemble the booklet. Flip-up books can be glued or stapled inside their interactive notebooks, file folder, or a 12 x 18 piece of construction paper folded like a book cover. Students could then decorate the cover of the booklet.

Civil Rights Timeline and Bulletin Board Kit

Timelines can be a confusing concept for younger students, but this resource can help! This resource includes 16 photo posters and timeline activities to complement your Civil Rights unit. The photo posters help students visualize and connect to the information and can be used in many different ways.

Some ideas:
✔ Use them to introduce the unit
✔ Display them around the classroom and have students travel around to complete their timelines
✔ Use them as an attractive bulletin board display
✔ Place them at a learning station so students can use them as reference to complete their blank timelines
✔ Use them as a way to review at the end of the unit

There are two different versions of the timeline. One is a cut, sort, and paste activity that matches the dates on the posters. These are great to use as an activity for stations or have students travel around the room to complete their timelines using the posters as a reference. Also included are blank timelines so students can add their own information and other important events/dates to match your unit.
