It is not graded like a test. The moment it carries a grade, kids start guessing to protect their score, and you lose the only thing that makes it useful: honest information about what they actually remember.

The 10-Minute Routine, Step by Step

The routine that works is almost aggressively simple. Five problems. Ten minutes. Every day. Same format all year.

Minutes 0 to 5: independent work. Kids work the five problems on their own, quietly. This is the part that has to be protected. If you circulate and start helping, you are no longer measuring what they can retrieve without you.

Minutes 5 to 8: review together. Go over the answers, but do not just read them out. Pick the one problem the most kids missed and have a student explain their thinking. One problem, explained well, is worth more than five problems read aloud.

Minutes 8 to 10: name the skill. Say out loud what each problem was asking. "Number three was rounding to the nearest hundred. We did that in November." Naming the skill helps kids file it somewhere they can find it again.

Where to Put It in Your Day

There is no single right slot. What matters is that it lands in the same place every day so it becomes automatic. Four options that work:

Morning work. Kids come in, sit down, and start. No instructions needed, which buys you the first ten minutes of the day for attendance, lunch count, and the kid who needs to tell you about the weekend.

Math warm-up. The first thing in your math block. This has a real advantage: it wakes up math thinking before the new lesson, and it separates review from new instruction so kids know the difference.

A skill you taught last month is slipping. Catch it now, while it takes five minutes to fix, instead of in March when it takes a week.

A monthly cumulative check-up is worth adding on top of the daily work. Daily practice tells you about today. A check-up every few weeks tells you whether anything is actually sticking.

Start the Year With Last Year's Skills

One more thing that makes a big difference, especially in August and September.

Do not start your spiral review with grade-level content. Start with the prerequisite skills from the grade below. Your third graders need second grade place value before third grade rounding will hold. Your fifth graders need fourth grade fraction sense before fifth grade operations with fractions will make sense.

Spending the first few weeks on last year's skills feels like going backward. It is not. You are finding out exactly which students arrived with which gaps, in ten minutes a day, without a formal diagnostic, before the gaps start costing you.
